Inner Child

When we moved into our home with a small child, one of the obstacles we had to overcome was the hard laminate surface that covered all of the major living areas. While our daughter began learning to crawl and walk, it seemed imperative to bring a "soft" area into our home where she could play. It was also a concern that our coffee table's sharp corners seemed to be a disaster waiting to happen. And so, out went the cheap coffee table, and in came the area rug.

Even though we are young parents with a child running rampant, I never really want our place to look "childish". However, I do want our home to be kid-friendly, and a fun and exciting place for our daughter to grow up- but I don't really want to move stacks of diapers and toys off the couch everytime I want to relax. And so, I admit that when we looked at area rugs, I had my mindset on something a bit more "adult" that would accentuate some of our living room themes. And while thumbing through rugs at Ikea, we stumbled upon this rug with animal silhouettes in the center.

BARNSLIG RINGDANS rug

It wasn't quite what I had in mind... but it was $10 cheaper than the one I liked, and was rubber-backed, which would cause it from slipping around... And to my shagrin, that little green rug came home.. and I love it. The shade of green fits in so well with our other green accents, and is a perfect fit.

Bright colors, fun shapes, cheerful designs- sometimes, it just doesn't seem fair that kids' decor gets all the fun. I struggled to see the end result otf the rug in our place until it lay under my feet. But I'm glad I listened to my wife and trusted her instinct! Here are some other "kids" decor items that could help liven up other rooms in your home:

Favorite Things (Outdoor Edition)

I've logged quite a few hours this past week hanging out on the deck with the family, planting flowers and admiring the sudden burst of warm weather that the Easter weekend brought. Our outdoor space has a small footprint, and we want to make the most of that area to relax and enjoy the weather. Here are some favorite things for your backyard- or deck-yard for some of us :-)

Bedroom to Go (Spring Shower)

I can't count how many people I encounter in a day that struggle with the same common issue: they want their house to be an expression of who they are, but have no clue how to bring that expression to life. They wonder what colors will work, what textures will tie it all together, what surface materials will set up the proper framework. Well, one of my favorite things happens to be envisioning plans and sourcing materials to make a room gel. So, below, I've collected materials to make a bedroom work. The premise of the room is based on the gray backdrop (a color that pays homage to this week's color of the week) with white lacquered furniture, and metallic accents and color pops. The inspiration: a gentle spring shower.

Chalk.

Interesting how one of the greatest burdens in your childhood has resurrected itself into one of the biggest home decor trends... That's right, I'm talking about the in-home chalkboard, made inexpensive and possible through the magic of chalkboard paint! I've flipped through countless design magazines over the past year or so that features one of these elusive walls, and so, when we purchased our own place, it was a no-brainer for us to install one. Originally, our plan was to paint a door with the chalkboard paint, but recently decided to paint a little sliver of a wall outside of our daughter's bedroom door insstead. Placing the chalkboard wall where we did was ideal for Hazel, but it also breaks up the bright blue in the foyer from the rest of the apartment.

While I was planning on buying the paint at Home Depot (for $20 a quart), I instead stumbled upon the paint at Benjamin Moore (for $12 a quart!). From reviews on both products I read, most claimed Benny Moore's to be more black and scrubbable (and cheaper too). At the store, the paint associate advised me to paint with a high desnity foam roller, and work it out in 3' sections. Worst advice ever. And really, I should've known better. Working it in 3' sections did not blend the paint at all. Instead, it created splotchy 3' areas where you can see the nap marks. But the chalk covers all that. As you can see in the picture below, we currently have an anatomical drawing of a calla lily that I did, and the bottom portion of the wall is where Hazel likes to draw and gnaw on chalk.

We don't use the wall quite as much as I thought we would... I considered writing grocery lists on the wall, but didn't think that to be a practical idea, as I would either have to bring the wall with me to the grocery store, or transfer the list onto a piece of paper- which would be a little redundant.

I ultimately feel that it's a great teaching tool for our daughter as we hope to place her in an environment where her creativity can flourish- however; she may be a bit too young for the wall, as she now has it in her head that she can draw on walls... and while she hasn't busted out the crayons on the wall yet, she does take rice crackers and other snacks and uses them to "draw" by pressing firmly onto the surface. Normally, this wouldn't be an issue, but our builder beige paint is poor quality and I think it can scuff up just by looking at it the wrong way... (oh well, another future project).

Speaking of future projects, I think we may have decided on some bathroom paint colors tonight. We're going to mull over them for a few days, and if all goes to plan, hopefully in a week or so, our bathroom will be revamped. Stay tuned- I'll be sure to post the process.

Color of the Week: Smoke

This is Benjamin Moore's Smoke 2122-40 and has been intriguing me for quite some time.

On a design project for a client I'm currently working with, we're going to paint their bedroom this smoky blue and will accent it with a charcoal gray feature headboard wall.

While I haven't used the color yet, here's a room done in Smoke 2122-40 from Benjamin Moore's Envision Color 2011 campaign:

56 sq ft of Disaster

I know it's the "thing" right now, but I think I'm going to swear off wallpaper. I had a customer this week, who bought 12 rolls of wallpaper for her house, hung them all, and had the paper fall off less than 24 hours later. She did all of the proper prep work- but it still would not stick. What a nightmare. We tried a piece of the same paper (and same dye lot) at work- and the paper is still stuck to the wall, and won't come off. It baffles me why the same paper wouldn't hang in someone's home, but it'll stick to an office wall at our store. I realize that the issue must lay deep in her walls- maybe a moisture issue, or something- but stories like this scare me to ever try wallpapering.

But, at the off chance of me changing my mind (which never happens) about wallpaper, here are some patterns to consider:
