Design 101: The Tulip Chair
I'm sure this chair is no stranger to you- you've probably seen it in some evolutionary form or another. The chair originated in 1955 and was designed by Eero Saarinen. His goal was to "clear up the slum of legs in the U.S. home"- as recorded in Time magazine in 1956. The inspiration- quite obviously- is the fluidity of a tulip flower. The design was extremely experimental for its time and since its debut has been considered a classic.
The chair's smooth lines portrays a futuristic feel and landed a spot on the original Star Trek series.
The past 55 years have seen much change and progress in the chair's design, as it remains an innovative classic.
